IIT Indore has introduced a unique course to impart mathematical and scientific knowledge from ancient texts in Sanskrit. The course titled “Understanding Classical Scientific Texts of India in an Immersive Sanskrit Environment”; bids to expose the present generation to ancient knowledge, says an official from the IIT. The IIT-I has also said that over 750 candidates from all over the world were participating in it.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)-sponsored quality improvement program began on 22 August. It will continue till 2 October with a total of 62 hours of online classes.

“Ancient texts of India were originally composed in Sanskrit. They have a rich heritage of mathematical and scientific knowledge and the present generation is unaware of this. We started this course to make them aware of this ancient knowledge in Sanskrit itself. ” Professor Neelesh Kumar is the officiating director of IIT Indore.
The course will, further, inspire participants to research, innovate, study and teach mathematics and science in Sanskrit, he said.
According to an IIT official, the course has two parts. The participants will first learn the nuances of Sanskrit to build their understanding of the language. Later, they will learn classical mathematics in Sanskrit.
IIT Indore has roped in a panel of experts for the program. These include Pramod Pandit, Mayuri Phadke, and Pravesh Vaishnav from Samskirta Bharti. They also have technical experts on the matter. These include Prof K Ramasubramanian and Dr. K Mahesh from IIT Bombay. Further, discussions will have to be in Sanskrit, failure to which students will not get a certificate.
IIT Indore will also conduct a qualifying examination to evaluate the participants. It will then award certificates to successful candidates.
