IDC rates HCL as no.1 desktop PC company in India

New Delhi: Indian PC maker HCL Infosystems was rated as the number one desktop PC company by IDC India's Quarterly PC market tracker report.

According to the report, HCL recorded good growth in terms of unit shipments during the AMJ quarter of 2005 maintaining its leadership position in the desktop market with a market share of 13.8 per cent.

Mr. George Paul, Executive Vice President - Marketing, HCL Infosystems Limited, said, "This growth is a testimony to the success of our four pronged strategy of creating buying power through introduction of low cost PCs & EMI schemes in partnership with banks, shaping aspirations by generating awareness, tailoring local solutions like RP2 - an innovative power solution to tackle erratic power issue & improving access by expanding direct & indirect distribution network across the country."

In comparison with Q2 of 2004 to Q2 of 2005, HCL's market share increased from 12.4 per cent to 13.8 per cent, a growth of 1.4 per cent in the overall Desktop market, which include commercial & home segment. In this period, HCL sold 130600 units.

In the consumer PC market, HCL sold 49600 units. HCL's market share increased from 11.5 per cent in Q2 of 2004 to 14.8 per cent in Q2 of 2005.

In commercial PC segment, which comprises of around 65 per cent of total Desktop PC market, HCL sold over 81,000 units in Q5 of 2005. In this segment, HCL's market share increased to 13.2 per cent in Q2 of 2005 from 12.9 per cent in Q2 of 2004.

In x86 Server space, HCL crossed the 5000 mark by selling 5170 units in a quarter, a YOY growth of 165 per cent. HCL's market share increased from 12.9 per cent in Q2 of 2004 to whopping 20.9 per cent in Q2 of 2005.
