IBM WebSphere retains top spot in APAC market

NEW DELHI: IBM WebSphere Software has retained its leadership in India and

the Asia Pacific region in the application server software platform (ASSP) in

revenue share, according to the latest IDC report. In 2001, WebSphere commanded

a 29.5 per cent ($40.5 million) revenue share, a 43.9 per cent increase compared

to 2000, IDC said. It marked the second year that WebSphere led the Asia Pacific

market. In India, IBM WebSphere owns 21.6 per cent of the market.






According to a recent report by Nasscom, the Indian Developer community is
approximately 4.28 lakh. Today, IBM’s developerWorks (dW) website (www.ibm.com/developerWorks)

which aims at providing resources to developers has over 1.70 lakh registered

users. In India, WebSphere has gained immense popularity with the developer

community. Approximately, 10 per cent of the dW registered users have enrolled

for WebSphere Developer Domain.






The WebSphere developers includes individuals to development houses and the
large IT companies such as TCS, Satyam, HCL, Tata Infotech, Sonata, WDC and

Mphasis amongst others. The developers are using WebSphere to develop

applications for multiple industries including banking and finance, industrial,

CSI as well as media.






Commenting on WebSphere’s dominance in India, Mahalingam, executive vice
president, TCS said, "In the last couple of years, our customers have begun

demanding application implementations on WebSphere. This is primarily because

WebSphere is an ideal platform for running and integrating e-business

applications. Keeping this in mind, TCS has a dedicated team of professionals

that work with customers to implement e-Business Solutions on the WebSphere

platform".






In India, WebSphere has been successfully deployed across industries, and has
gained immense momentum in the banking and financial segment. WebSphere

customers in the banking and finance segment include ICICI, Calcutta Stock

Exchange and Syndicate Bank. It has also been implemented across various large

organisations such as Exchange Next, GE Countrywide, Times Internet, Metal

Junction, IPF Online and Bhilwara Infotech Limited.






The latest IDC report concerning the Asia Pacific software market from 2001
through 2006 noted that "major players like IBM, BEA, Sun and Oracle, that

together own 70 per cent of the market, are moving aggressively to gain market

share and position their product as the chosen infrastructure to build on."
