IBM No. 1 player in the India Application Deployment Software market

MUMBAI, INDIA: IDC has ranked IBM’s WebSphere as the market leader in the Application Deployment Software market. According to IDC Packaged Software Tracker 2006, IBM WebSphere’s market share in India stood at 28 percent. With Indian companies scaling their operations to take on competition at international levels, technology adoption has seen a substantial growth. The domestic market for WebSphere grew significantly due to increased globalization and integration activities that drove the deployment of web-enabled applications.

According to Praveen Sengar, Manager – Software & Services Research, IDC India, “Most organizations today depend on technology driven innovations to ensure sustained competitive advantage. Given this, software implementation that brings in flexibility and faster integration becomes imperative. More so, in emerging markets like India where competition is becoming intense and organizations are increasingly scaling up operations, application deployment software as a category is expected to grow at an year-on-year rate of 27 percent (2007 over 2006)”. 

Momentum in key Industries

IBM has bagged significant customers in the previous financial year and has seen maximum traction in the Telecom and Banking sectors in WebSphere adoption. With customers like, State Bank of India, Max Newyork Life, HDFC, Tata Sky and BSNL, IBM has emerged as the most preferred partner in application software.

One of the recent significant wins for WebSphere in India includes State Bank of India. According to N Jambunathan, Head – Payments, State Bank of India, “IBM WebSphere software implementation provided us with a common platform for transformation and routing between payment channels and backend applications like core-banking. One of the biggest benefits we see is that we’ll be able to offload huge amount of pressure from the core-banking level for every new customer interface requirement to the IBM middleware platform. With IBM solution we’ll be able to focus on our area of expertise and improve existing and add new banking services”.

IBM leverages WebSphere to offer solutions on SOA for its customers in India. WebSphere has been one of the fastest growing areas for IBM Software Group and more than 9,000 independent software vendors from across the world write applications on top of WebSphere.
