IBM names new director, expands board to 13

SAN FRANCISCO: International Business Machines Corp., the world's largest computer company, named Minoru Makihara as a director and expanded the board to 13 members, according to regulatory filings.



Makihara, 74, had previously served on Armonk, New York-based IBM's board from 1997 to 2003 and was president of both Mitsubishi International Corp. in the United States and president of Mitsubishi Corp.



He retired as chairman and become senior corporate advisor in April, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.



IBM's board, which had 12 members before Makihara's election, includes Cathleen Black, president of Hearst Magazines, a unit of publisher Hearst Corp., Sidney Taurel, chairman, president and chief executive of pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and Co. and Lorenzo Zambrano, chairman and chief executive of cement maker Cemex SA.
