EAST FISHKILL: International Business Machines Corp said on Tuesday it was
developing a series of chips to connect multiple computer systems and
peripherals like hard disk drives, enabling them to work together as a single
high-performance server.
IBM said it would base the chips on a technology called InfiniBand, a
standard being developed by the industry body, InfiniBand Trade Association.
IBM and chip maker Intel Corp are leading the plan, which has the support of
other manufacturers of computers, peripheral equipment and networking gear.
IBM said the InfiniBand standard was intended to make products work more
easily together to enhance performance and sharing of data.
IBM said it aimed to release the association's final specification later this
year and it expected its supporting series of chip products to become available
next year.
Shares of IBM closed up six on the New York Stock Exchange at 120. The stock
has a one-year high of 139-3/16 and a one-year low of 89-3/4.
