NEW YORK: International Business Machines Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc. said that they would work together to tailor IBM's data storage software to Cisco's storage switches.

A switch is a device that directs information or data traffic on a network.

Cisco, the world's largest maker of equipment that directs Internet traffic, entered the storage business last year with plans to be one of the two largest players within three to five years.

Cisco's start in the storage switch business, where it competes against Brocade Communications Systems Inc. and McData Corp., has been slower than it expected.

The companies said that the agreement will reduce the complexity and cost of managing storage area networks.
