IBM to build Asia's largest data centre

ARMONK, USA: IBM and Range Technology Development Co. (Range Technology) announced that they will build an enterprise-class cloud computing data centre to support the development of Hebei Province as a information technology and services-based economy.

The centre, which is expected to be completed in 2016, is touted to be the largest in Asia and will be of 620,000 square meters or approximately 6.2 million square feet in space.

The collaboration will help companies across China with enterprise-wide strategic outsourcing services, business continuity and disaster recovery services in addition to loud computing storage and mobile device management services.

"The data centre offers the world-class infrastructure capabilities and advanced network based services to support the business growth of our clients," said Zhou Chaonan, chairman, Range Technology Development Co., Ltd. "This initiative plays a critical role in the economic development of China in light of the pressing demand for managed hosting in the areas of cloud computing and mobile devices."

The centre, which is touted to be of 620,000 square meters or approximately 6.2 million square feet, will be built as per IBM green building standards. It will also serve as the IT infrastructure platform of Langfang Range International Information Hub, which is located in the Hebei Langfang Economic Development Zone.

"Data centres have always been a critical part of IBM's heritage as we own or manage over 8 million square feet of data centres for our clients. We have also designed and built over 30 million square feet for clients on a global basis," said Steven Sams, vice president, IBM Site and Facilities Services. "This new facility will levearage IBM's data centre innovation and resources to provide a cost-effective solution while providing the flexibility to meet the unpredictable changes in IT demand — whether it is from changes in IT technology or new business models such as cloud computing."
