NEW YORK: International Business Machines Corp. said that it had agreed to buy privately held software maker Trigo Technologies Inc. for an undisclosed amount as part of its software expansion.

IBM, based in Armonk, New York, has bought many small and large software companies in the past few years, including Rational Software for $2.1 billion about one year ago as it expands its business of providing software that helps pieces of software work together.

Trigo Technologies, based in Brisbane, California, makes software that enables companies to integrate and centrally manage disparate product information. It also has operations in Amsterdam and Bangalore, India. The company has 150 employees and customers include Staples, Sony and Unilever.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter.
