MUMBAI: India’s e-learning companies continue to grow from strength to strength, as another e-learning major, Hurix Systems was appraised as CMMI Level 4 company, the only publishing and e-learning company in the world to be appraised at that level. CMMI stands for Capability Maturity Model Integration, a successor to the popular CMM certification.

What does this mean for the company? “Hurix has achieved maturity level 4, which means that we are at the stage where we can quantify and measure the results that have been achieved and how much they vary from the targets that we set. This is essential for refining our processes and systems further,” says Subrat Mohanty, CEO, Hurix.

Hurix has been in the expansion mode; it recently crossed the 450-headcount mark and is in the process of setting up an ODC for one of the world’s largest educational publishing companies. It has taken two years for the company to be certified at this level. According to Mohanty there are two benefits that accrue from this certification.

“Internally, it has helped us to align our processes across various disciplines for better cohesiveness. It has also helped us to streamline and refine our processes. And secondly, it helps us externally, as it becomes easier for us to convince prospective clients of the strength of our capabilities. Because of the recognition that CMMI has worldwide, saying that we are at Level 4 goes a long way towards establishing our credentials,” says Mohanty. Worldwide, MNCs prefer to work with companies that are certified at certain levels, some are even known to specify CMMI as prequalification criteria.

So what’s next on the menu for Hurix? “This brings us one step closer to the highest level within the CMMI quality framework, Level 5. It usually takes anything between 12 and 18 months to reach Level 5. We intend to achieve it within the minimum time,” mentions Mohanty.
