The backbone network spread across India spanning over 100 cities has been built using Huawei's state-of-the-art Next Generation DWDM products and solution based on its "Super WDM" platform. In its fully equipped state, the offered "Super WDM" system is capable of providing bandwidth of the order of 1.6 Terabits. The project mandate for Huawei also includes provision of Managed Services - a first in India by any fixed network operator. Huawei landed this project for turnkey supply of "10Gb, Multi-reach, Ultra Long Haul DWDM" optical transmission equipment in July 2006.

According to M R Madhusudhan, Head-Network Global Operations VSNL,"A competent technical evaluation authority appointed by VSNL successfully carried out rigorous validation and testing of the Super WDM equipment over a prolonged period before clearing its large scale deployment. We are delighted with the performance of the DWDM equipment from Huawei as it has not only reduced the capital and operating expenditure but has also significantly enhanced the reliability and availability of the network while providing for investment protection. We expect this network backbone to deliver high quality multi-play, multimedia broadband services to all our end customers"

In his comments, Max Yang, managing director, Huawei Telecommunications India said, "The delivery of the network today marks a big milestone for Huawei in India and reiterates the value we bring to operators across environments and our ability to help our customers achieve improved operational efficiencies. We will be investing further in expanding our R&D in optical network solutions in India to meet the growing demand."

Added Ramdev Sharma, CTO, Huawei Telecommunications India, "In an era of intense competition among operators, "Super WDM" technology is crucial as it allows carriers like VSNL to improve their network reliability and availability, have faster time to market, enjoy investment protection and, above all, enhance their operational efficiencies  The DWDM product supplied to VSNL is among the most innovative and advanced in the industry known for it's feature-rich capabilities including various kinds of IP data services, GMPLS control plane and Automatically Switched Optical Network complying to ITU defined OTN standards".

According to Ovum-RHK, a leading global telecom research firm, Huawei has emerged as the largest supplier of Multi-Reach, Ultra Long Haul DWDM optical networking gear globally in 2006. Since 2001, Huawei has consistently maintained and consolidated its leadership position in the Asia Pacific Region Optical Network market.
