Exactly a year before on January 20, 2012, the New Zealand Police had placed him in custody in response to US charges of criminal copyright infringement in relation to his Megaupload website.

Dotcom was accused of costing the entertainment industry $500 million through pirated content uploaded to his file-sharing site, which had 180 million registered users. Dotcom has vigorously denied the charges.

Now, Dotcom is planning to return with a bang with the new file-sharing website. Mega is a cloud storage service that uses encryption to protect users from government or third party "spies" from invading users' privacy. Dotcom is also offering free subscription.

Hours after the website went live, Dotcom wrote on Twitter:"Mega had received 250,000 user registrations. Wow. I have never seen anything like this. From 0 to 10 Gigabit bandwidth utilization within 10 minutes."

Dotcom is promising higher privacy levels for cloud storage service. The founders claim on the website: We have programmed this Internet service from scratch in Auckland, New Zealand. Unlike most of our competitors, we use a state of the art browser based encryption technology where you, not us, control the keys.
