Government of India is digitising every process to ease our lives. The new FASTag will ease daily commuters’ life. Almost every person has spent their time to just cross a toll plaza, and the worst part is – sometimes hours in the queue.

The new FASTag system will remove manual operation of toll collection, meaning no longer ques. If you have a FASTag you can move easily and electronically your toll will be collected. This is being implemented by 1st Dec 2019 and if you don’t have a FASTag then toll charges will be double.

What is FASTag?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that employs RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is operating this system to collect toll directly from prepaid or savings account to it or owner of toll.

It looks like a simple sticker that affixes on the windscreen of the vehicle. Once it is activated, you can drive through the toll plaza without stopping for the transaction.

Is FASTag compulsory?

Nitin Gadkari, the Road Transport and Highways Minister, has announced that FASTag is mandatory for all vehicles from 1st Dec 2019. If a vehicle crosses toll plaza without this, toll charges will be double at toll gates across the country.

So, no excuses, go and buy one before 1st Dec if you don't have it already.

How to buy FASTag?

There are multiple options to purchase a FASTag. You can buy it from official Tag issuers or participating banks. This can be linked to your bank account or can have prepaid account then recharge to make payments.

Currently, 22 certified banks are issuing FASTag through various channels including online, selected bank branches and Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals at National Highway toll plazas. This is also available on e-commerce portals like Amazon and mobile wallets like Airtel, Paytm.

Buy FASTag from ICICI Bank

Step 1: Visit the ICICI Bank website and you will get a popup for FASTag with a button “Apply Now” click on that.

In case unable to see the popup, on the main page, you will see a slider for the same, click on the button “Buy Now”.

And the third option is another popup available on the bottom right side, click on “Apply Now”.

Step 2: When you click on apply Now or Buy Now button, you will get a form asking your details with one government ID. Fill in the details and upload the document then click on continue.

Step 3: Another form will appear asking vehicle details, fill in all the required details to proceed further to confirm your purchase.

Step 1: HDFC home page has two options – Main slider and one banner below the main menu to buy FASTag. Click on any one of the buttons to proceed purchase.

Step 2: When you will click on the “Apply Now” button, it will take you a page asking details if you have HDFC Bank account or not.

If you have an account it will ask you to enter your Customer ID.

If you select “No” then it will ask for vehicle details.

For commercial vehicle, it will ask for company and contact person details.

For personal vehicle, it will ask for the owner’s details.

Once you are done with details then click the checkbox to agree the terms and then click on ‘Next’.

Step 3: The next page will ask for vehicle registration details, fill in to proceed.

Step 4: Now upload your documents, then click next to review and submit the application.

Step 1: Visit the official page of Axis Bank, on the right side you will see a banner of FASTag, click on “Get a Free FASTag” button. It will take you to another page where you can check all the details about the this, click on “Get a Free FASTag” once again to proceed.

Step 2: It will ask for your Mobile no, enter and click on ‘Submit’ to get OTP, enter the OTP and click on submit.

Step 3: You will get a form asking for your and vehicle details. Fill in the details and upload the required documents.

Step 4: Once you filled all the details, click on the “Validate” button and then “Proceed to Payment” to finalize FASTag purchase.

What is the validity of FASTag?

Your FASTag comes with unlimited validity. Once purchased you can use it till there is no physical damage.

What if the FASTag gets damaged?

In this situation, you can visit the issuer agency to get a replacement for the FASTag.

What if I sell/ transfer my car?

Inform the issuer agency about the sell or transfer.

Can one vehicle use more than one FASTag?

Do not purchase two FASTags for one vehicle as it can lead to operational issues. And the issuer won’t be responsible for this.

Charges for buying FASTag

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has fixed Rs 100 charge to issue a FASTag from any certified bank. However, actual charges will vary from bank to bank.

For instance, ICICI bank is charging Rs 499.12 that includes

Rs 99.12 for Tag issuance fees

Rs 200 for Refundable Security Deposit

Rs 200 for first recharge amount in the wallet when the wallet is been created

HDFC bank is charging Rs 400, that includes…

Axis Bank is charging 200 that includes security deposit only and they are giving FASTag for free.

How to buy FASTag offline?

Visit the nearest authorized bank or certified issuer agency or Point of Sales (POS) locations with a copy of your know-your-customer (KYC) documents along with the original documents. Fill the application form to get your FASTag and attach all the required documents. Submit the form and once you get the approval, the issuer will provide FASTag to affix on your car’s windshield.

How to recharge your FASTag?

If you have linked your FASTag with your bank account then no need to recharge, it will debit the toll charges from the bank account.

In case you have prepaid FASTag, then you can recharge it by making payment through cheque or credit card/ debit card/NEFT /RTGS or through Net-banking.

You can recharge your FASTag account with up to Rs 1 lakh for KYC-compliant customers.
