The Amazon is the largest river in the world. It discharges at an average of 2 lakh plus cubic metres per second, more than many other large global rivers combined. It’s a fitting name for a company that plans total world domination.

Amazon is one of the few companies that touched the US$1 trillion market capitalization figure. (That’s a thousand billion-dollar companies) Owner Jeff Bezos regularly tops the world’s richest person list, being worth more than the GDP of many small countries.

But it’s not just about money. This year he was on top of the Forbes list of innovative leaders, along with billionaire genius Elon Musk.

But there are many reasons why Amazon is the company of the future and Bezos is looking at complete global domination…

He wants to sell you everything

A few years back Amazon India announced that it would sell the Ford EcoSport online, to be delivered directly to your doorstep. While there was absolutely no chance at that time it would even dent the car dealer network, it was to prove a point and show that in the future that Amazon is open to selling anything and everything.

Uranium. A pre-fabricated home. Live ladybugs. It’s all been delivered on Amazon, which ships out millions of products many which you are familiar with and many you aren’t. Bezos made it clear early on, that he wants to sell “everything” and that in the long run he is in competition with “everyone”.

He wants to sell to everyone

Bezos believes in business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-government (B2G). That’s the B2E (business-to-everyone) triple play. Amazon wants to reach every consumer in every corner on this planet. They take Amazon for Business seriously. They also had a tie-up with the CIA!

He wants to sell in every way

Amazon used to sell via FedEx, till the latter realized that they were a threat. They also had a tie-up with US Post. But that’s just scratching the surface. Amazon owns 60 big cargo planes and tens of thousands of delivery trucks and has ordered many more along with a plan to acquire 100,000 electric trucks.

Amazon Prime Air is a drone delivery service. In case you didn’t know, Alphabet (Google) and Uber aren’t the only companies working on driverless cars. Amazon is going hard at that too.

He wants to be emperor of the cloud

The cloud is the future and Bezos wants a slice of that pie too. As mentioned above, Amazon Web Services are already in the B2E triple play business and have clocked annual revenues in excess of US$25 billion. In the global cloud infrastructure services market, AWS thrashes both Microsoft and Alphabet.

He wants to be a space force too

While Musk’s SpaceX and Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic regularly make news; Bezos is a quiet player with Blue Origin, founded in 2000 with 2500 employees. Blue Origin has tested suborbital rocket multiple times in a bid to enter the world of futuristic space tourism.

Will Netflix or Prime replace Hollywood?

Advertisment

Hollywood is straining at the edges as ticket sales are going down and everyone knows that the future is subscription-based streaming services, just look at Netflix and the recently launched Disney Plus. Here’s an interesting aside: In 2018, Prime’s 2018 revenue was US$14.17 billion and Netflix’s was US$15.79 billion. Not much to separate them, is there?

The Washington Post

In 2013, Bezos, not Amazon, bought The Washington Post for $US250 million “in cash”! Such is the ambition of Bezos and the power he wants to wield. Not many can spend such an amount of liquid cash for a personal vanity project, or is it? Is it merely another stepping stone in the path of world domination? Even billionaires don’t have such deep pockets. Did you know that Bezos invested $250,000 in Google in 1998? That was worth billions well into the 2010s.

A to Z

The Alexa is ready for the IoT-enabled world of tomorrow to get a foothold into Industry 4.0. In fact Amazon Supply already provides industrial and scientific components. Amazon Go is a physical store that will automatically let you pick up goods and charge you as you exit. AmazonWireless offers cellular services and service plans. Bezos is ready for the A to Z of everything.

That’s why he’s most likely to succeed in the Billionaires’ battle of tomorrow!
