SHANGHAI - Hong Kong telecoms network operator PCCW Ltd. said it would work
with Rupert Murdoch's Star TV to explore Internet protocol pay-TV (IPTV)
opportunities, drawing on each other's strengths.
PCCW and Star, a unit of News Corp., would work with platform operators and
media companies in Asia to provide services for IPTV, or television transmitted
over telecoms networks using Internet protocol, PCCW said in a statement issued
late on Thursday.
PCCW, Hong Kong's former fixed-line phone monopoly, already operates an IPTV
service in Hong Kong, and says it is the world's top provider of such a service
with over half a million subscribers.
The company has been looking outside its home market for new revenue streams
to fuel growth as its core fixed-line phone business matures and it faces new
competition on that front.
Star is one of Asia's top television service providers, with offerings in
markets including India and China.
