HYDERABAD:San Jose-based HelloSoft Inc., having an R&D facility in Hyderabad has announced that its upper layer (L2/L3) GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) stack has been licensed by MIMOS Berhad (Malaysia), for implementing the latter's myGP cellular terminal.

The GPRS solution consists of low-complexity patented algorithms for superior performance and is ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) compliant.

HelloSoft's GPRS stack will be integrated with MIMOS' ASIC-based proprietary baseband to constitute full GPRS solution. The GPRS protocol stack is optimally implemented on MIMOS's myGP and enables Class C Mobile stations with Class 2 and 10 multi-slot GPRS services using GSM 900/1800 MHz frequencies.

The protocol stack is POSIX compliant and is ported onto a wide variety of operating systems such as Linux, Windows and VxWorks on various platforms.

``They will be using it for various applications. This is significant for us since GPRS and GSM is a big market,'' said Rama Rao, HelloSoft's co-founder and VP Asia.

"This will assist MIMOS with their next generation designs and we foresee great potential for myGP on a global scale. Hellosoft's GPRS Solution exhibits higher-performance, low-power and lower cost over alternative solutions," said Rama Rao.

HelloSoft also offers complete solutions for GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS and multi-mode Cellular, Wifi, and VoIP solutions for converged wireless networks such as UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem). MIMOS's myGP first version GPRS terminal will be used for two main applications: Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) and internet connection for 900 and 1800 MHz band.

MIMOS Berhad is an R&D organisation in information and communication technology (ICT) and microelectronics.

MOBILEIGNITE ADDS HELLOSOFT: Meanwhile the company has been added as a member of MobileIGNITE, an independent industry association of leading service providers and vendors that collaborate on accelerating the time to market for multi-vendor fixed-mobile convergence solutions that work in existing fixed and mobile networks with a smooth transition to the IP Multimedia System (IMS) environment. ``As a member we'll be required to give our suggestions to the consortium,'' informed Rama Rao.

FUNDING FROM INTEL: Earlier in the month, Intel Capital had made an equity investment in HelloSoft as part of Series B funding. The Series B round was led by TD Capital Ventures with the participation from new investors Mitsui & Company Venture Partners, Entrepia Ventures, and current investors, including Venrock Associates, Sofinnova Ventures and Jump Startup. The funding will be used for further product development and marketing. As part of its expansion efforts, HelloSoft plans to increase its headcount to 200-250 from the existing 150 at its Hyderabad centre.
