BANGALORE: B2B electronic commerce solution company Global eXchange Services (GXS) will be expanding its employee base in India by 30 percent. Currently, the company employs 150 engineers at its Bangalore center, which is responsible for 70 percent of the company's core product development.

Emphasizing on role played by the Bangalore center, company president and CEO Gary Greenfield said, "We have identified India as a strategic center for GXS globally and I'm pleased to note that we have progressed significantly up the value chain."

At the time of its inception in 2000, GXS Bangalore worked on product development support. Since then, the company has transitioned to complete lifecycle development–from requirements to deployment, development and maintenance, incorporating technologies like J2EE, web services, B2B protocols, eBXML, Rosettanet and AS2.

Reiterating on the company's renewed focus in the country Global eXchange Services’ India Technology Center Vice President Maya Vidhya said that the center would work on new company projects such as data synchronization solutions for the retail industry in addition to the current activities.

However, both Greenfield and Vidhya refused to give details of the exact investment being made by the company in India. Greenfield, however, said that India's advantage lay in the "superb access to engineering talent and the tremendous cost advantage, which works out to three engineers in India for the salary of one employee in the US."

GXS, which was previously a wholly owned subsidiary of GE, was acquired by Francisco Partners in June 2002 and now operates as an independent company. However, GE still retains 10 percent ownership in the company. The company's turnover last year stood at $363 million.
