The furore over the arrest of Avnish Bajaj, CEO, Baazee.com seems to have cast a veil of uncertainty over the future of e-commerce in India. How this particular event will finally resolve itself is unknown at this moment. But what is known is that under the India Information Technology Act 2000, there is a draconian law which states that a person can be arrested on grounds of suspicion and the onus of proving innocence lies on the accused. Whether this law should at all exist when dealing with a medium such as the Internet, where information is freely available, is the question that the lawmakers of this country will have to seriously ponder the next few days. We wonder if it's a case of ignoring the message and shooting the messenger.
