Google News Showcase launches in India with 30 publishers; Everything You Need to Know

Card-based news content provider, Google News Showcase feature is now available in India. 30 publications are part of the launch that will showcase Swipeable News panels. They will appear in Google Discover and News starting in English and Hindi.

You can expand the card to read more news articles from these publishers. Google News Showcase content is available within the Google News app on both iOS and Android apps. You may also access it via the mobile web. It has a user-friendly interface to access news across major publishers of the country.

What is Google News Showcase?

Google News Showcase, inside the Google News app, will help bring news articles from various publications. So far, the users were able to have a look at news articles piled up together for a specific trending together. However, users did not have an option to read news from their favourite publication in one place. To fix this, the search engine giant has launched Google News Showcase which is a card-based service that shows the top 5 news articles from your favourite publisher.

Brad Bender, VP, Product Management, News, Google Inc explained the new showcase is “a new online experience and licensing programme for publishers that provides a customisable space for news content in Google News and discover”.

The $1 billion licensing program aims to support publishers and surface new card-based content across services. It is now coming to India. The effort has also signed over 700 deals with news publications in Germany, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, the UK, Argentina, Australia, Czechia, and Italy.

Which 30 publications in India received the go-ahead for Showcase?

Starting today, Google News Showcase launches in India with 30 news publishers. Some national, regional and local news organizations like The Hindu Group, HT Digital Streams Ltd, Indian Express Group, ABP LIVE, India TV, NDTV, Zee News, Amar Ujala, Deccan Herald, Punjab Kesari, The Telegraph India, IANS (Indo Asian News Service), ANI, etc are part of the project. Interestingly, no portal of the Times Group features in the list.

How to use the Showcase App?

Here’s how you can access it on the app:

- Open the Google News app on your smartphone.

- Tap on the Newsstand option on the bottom right corner.

- Here, you will see different publisher cards.

- You can either choose to read the top 5 news articles from the publisher or tap on the publisher’s logo to read more news articles.
