LONDON: Google's co-founder Larry Page admitted on Tuesday that the company has been losing out to Twitter in the race to meet web user's demand for real-time information.

Speaking at the Google Zeitgeist event Page admitted Google had so far “done a relatively poor job of creating things that work on a per second basis”.

“People really want to do stuff in real-time and they (Twitter) have done a great job about it... We will do a good job of things now we have these examples,” The Guardian newspaper quoted him as saying.

On the other hand, Google chairman and chief executive Eric Schmidt said that the Internet giant “can work” with Twitter without having to buy the social network.

“We do not have to buy everyone to work with them," said Schmidt.

The success of Twitter had recently given rise to the speculation that Google could acquire the micro-blogging site.
