Within a week of its launch, Google's new video calling app Duo is topping charts on Google Play. To be specific, just four days after the global launch of Google Duo, the app has claimed the top spot in the free apps in the US Google Play store, above other popular apps like Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and YouTube Music.

Google Duo's technical lead Justin Uberti, tweeted that Duo is now the top free app which also means, PokemonGo, the augmented reality gaming app, is finally off the top spot.

In the India App Store, Google Duo is topping the charts under the free section and 'Trending' sections. However, with WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, ShareIt, Facebook, and UC Browser apps still in the lead, the app lags behind at the sixth position.

In the initial stages of rollout, few users in US and Canada did complain about failed verification via SMS, but that soon got fixed, and the global rollout has now successfully been completed.

Google also claims that the app works even on low strength networks. The company elaborates that the app adjusts the quality of the video automatically in spotty networks to avoid hiccups in the conversation.

It's also worth noting that the Duo app, which many consider Google's answer to Apple's FaceTime calling service, is gaining traction on Apple devices as well. According to AppShopper, currently the video calling app is at No. 22 among all free apps and No. 4 in the free social-networking app category for iPhone users.
