The company reported 54 percent growth in total enterprise application activations quarter over quarter, up from a 43 percent growth rate from Q2 to Q3 of last year. The data shows that businesses with a more established mobile approach are now focused on deploying the types of apps that can increase employee productivity and encourage collaboration, which are ultimately designed to impact business performance.

Custom enterprise app development continued to grow at an astounding 55 percent quarter over quarter, with the greatest amount of growth seen in the business intelligence, secure browser and social business app categories. While document editing remains the most activated enterprise app, more advanced mobile apps are gaining significant ground. Enterprises begin their mobile lifecycle strategy by leveraging mobile apps for fundamental tasks such as email and contacts access, as well as editing capabilities, but are now increasingly looking to develop apps that drive new efficiencies, new workflows and new revenue streams. The report data indicates that they are moving into this more mature phase by enabling employees to use their mobile devices to complete more complex tasks via mobile apps.

According to Maribel Lopez, founder of Lopez Research LLC:""Enterprise mobile app development is on the rise. Almost two-thirds of the companies surveyed in the Q4 2013 Lopez Research benchmark plan to mobile-enable at least 5 or more applications in 2014."

"Our customers are becoming more sophisticated in their approach and implementation of a complete secure mobility solution, as they learn there are new ways to extract value from the devices their employees are carrying with mobile workflows," said Christy Wyatt, CEO and President, Good Technology. "We are living in a transformative era for mobility where enterprises are implementing smarter apps, and developing custom apps, that are improving the way their employees engage with customers and collaborate with each other."

From a device perspective, iOS smartphones made up 54 percent of all device activations last quarter, with Android's share of activations decreasing to 26 percent. This is not surprising, given the introduction of two new iPhone models to the market in late Q3. In addition, organizations continue to migrate away from BlackBerry to meet end user demand and embrace new platforms such as iOS and Android. As a result, overall device activation levels increased 34 percent from Q1 to Q4, indicating strong, continued growth and adoption of the Good Secure Mobility Solution to secure both the data and device.

Additional report findings include:

The top apps activated on tablet and smartphone devices were: document editing, custom apps and file access applications, making up 63 percent of the total enterprise apps activated in Q4.

Android tablet activations held steady from Q3 to Q4, while smartphone activations slightly decreased by one percentage point quarter over quarter.

Financial services industry continues to lead by a large margin in total iPad activations, recording over 46 percent of total tablet activations in Q4. This is likely attributed to the many known use cases of the tablet in this particular industry.

For the first time this quarter, the energy and utilities sector was reported as one of the top ten industries for total number of device activations, with two and a half percent reported.
