NEW DELHI, INDIA: By the end of this year, the direct cash transfer scheme will be extended to more than 700 districts across the country. Currently, the scheme is being implemented in 51 districts.

Beneficiaries of the 100-day employment guarantee programme, old age pension and medical insurance will receive the payments directly to their bank accounts under the cash transfer scheme.

"In the Union Budget 2011, the government announced a direct transfer of subsidies to BPL households which is a drastic departure from the existing indirect or price subsidy system wherein subsidies are routed through manufacturers who are required to sell goods below the market rate," said Union Finance Minister, P Chidambaram.
