Global chip sales up 8.2 p.c in Sept 2009

LONDON, UK: China posted 3-month average sales of $4.07 billion for chips in September 2009 – up by 8.3 per cent from $3.76 billion in August 2009.

According to the data released by the European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA) recently, chip sales in the rest of the Asia-Pacific region in September 2009 came to, on an average, worth $6.87 billion. This was an increase by 9.1 per cent from the average sales of $6.29 billion in August 2009.

The ESIA data shows that, overall, the 3-month average global sales of semiconductors went up to $20.64 billion in September 2009, which is up by 8.2 per cent, from an upwardly revised $19.07 billion in August 2009, and down by 10.1 per cent from September 2008.

The Americas, which has been leading in the recovery of the semiconductors market, however, did not perform as expected. The Americas region achieved only 6.2 per cent sequential growth – its market share rising from $3.25 billion to $3.46 billion.

The European region, in contrast, reported a strong growth of 8.8 per cent despite a low base. The region, on an average, posted sales worth $2.62 billion in September 2009.

The performance of Japan, according to the European Semiconductor Industry Association, came close to the global average, with a sequential growth of 8.0 per cent. Japan’s chip sales in September 2009 were, on an average, worth $3.62 billion.

The European Semiconductor Industry Association publishes numbers, which are collated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics as a 3-month average, in line with the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).
