Geodesic launches net telephony services

MUMBAI, INDIA: City based Geodesic Information System Limited, the software products provider for communication and entertainment entered the Internet telephony space with Spokn – net telephony services here on Tuesday.

With the Spokn, Geodesic is largely targeting the families with expatriates settled abroad, enterprises and international travelers, by offering low cost international calls. The service will be functional from the coming Saturday onwards.

According to Anil Raj, Spokn’s head of Business, the telephony service will reduce cost of international calls and roaming charges and also simplify the complexity of telephony services.

“While in India the PC penetration is still low, our goal is to provide Internet goodies to people who don’t have PCs. Spokn is a bridge between PC and normal telephony as the focus is on user interface (UI) and user experience (UX),” said Raj.

Spokn offers free incoming long distance calls at low rates, voice messaging service (VMS), compatibility with multiple devices and direct numbers presently available across eight countries.

Subscribers of the service gets free incoming calls which allows them call over 40 countries at local costs for free and can also receive incoming calls on mobile or land line phones at a small cost.

With VMS, the user can record and send a 20 second message to any telephone or email account worldwide. It is free for emails, while for phones its charged with a free 20 second reply.

Moreover, Spokn subscribers can get their own eight digit local phone number across 10 countries at a dollar per month. It allows cheaper rate calling facility with local call charges.

Spokn supports all smart phones as well as entry level and land line telephone devices. Apart, the downloadable application supports all operating systems including Windows and Mac.

According to Ashahar Farhan, Spokn’s head - Technology, the company has developed the light weight telephony protocol and the application is fully compliant and adheres to regulations such as lawful intercept (LT), caller identification (ID) propagation and other security norms.
