NEW DELHI: Software giant Microsoft and Java maker Sun Microsystem's are working in union with each other to enhance interoperability between their platforms' file systems etc. Said an online report.

Formal announcement of what's in the pipeline will be made sometime next month. This is further to their plans to integrate each others' Web services architectures and operating systems.

The duo's plans to provide interoperability between Microsoft's Active Directory and Sun's Java System Identity Server, which were scheduled for release in October this year has also been postponed as the two are working on an expanded plan. Said the report.

Solution providers are optimistic about the way things are taking shape between the two software makers and are sure that it will make lives of customers easy who face a difficult time integrating their Unix and Windows systems.

Whether the two are working towards interoperability between Sun's next-generation file system, code-named ZFS, in Solaris 10 and Microsoft's next-gen file system, code-named WinFS is still not disclosed.

With the directory interoperability in place Sun and Microsoft users can take the benefit of single sign-on capabilities in a dual directory infrastructure.

These developments are a result of the truce between Microsoft and Sun and signing of a 10-year pact promising significant interoperability between their platforms.
