NEW DELHI: After the launch of its notebook range, provider of IT and communication solutions, Fujitsu is planning a foray into the desktop PCs segment in India.

Betting high on the low PC penetration across the country, Fujitsu is planning its range of desktop PCs for the competitive Indian market in three months.

Ivan Kam, associate director, business development, Fujitsu PC Asia Pacific said that the company is highly optimistic about the opportunities in the Indian market. “We have launched six new premium models of notebooks for the Indian market. This is our debut entry into this market segment,” Kam said.

Kam added that currently Fujitsu markets its products through distributors across the country. He said that once the company launches its full range of notebooks and desktop PCs for the Indian market, it would appoint a sales team in the country.

“Apart from the distributor business, we would also be looking at setting up our own marketing team. This will give us an edge in the market to expand our product reach in to the interior locations of the country,” informed Kam.

The company has set a target to ship around 30,000 units in its notebook segment for the fiscal ending March 2009. Fujitsu is targeting to be in the top 10 position in the notebook market. “To achieve a slot in the top 10 segment we should be achieving around two per cent market share. We are targeting to hit the target in the next two years time,” he said.

According to the IDC reports for the third quarter 2007, the overall India client PC market grew 25.1 per cent Year-on-Year in terms of unit shipments to 1.8 million. For the period Q3 2007 over Q3 2006, desktop PC shipments showed a growth of 10.9 per cent, while notebook PC shipments showed a growth of 84.8 per cent.

For both the segments- PC and notebooks, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 21.6 per cent, followed by HCL at 12.3 per cent and Lenovo at 10.3 per cent, in terms of unit shipments during the third quarter of calendar year 2007.

However, the Indian market still holds huge opportunities for growth due to the low rural PC penetration. With the emergence of huge e-governance projects and growing SMB space, the market is likely to witness growth in the coming years.
