“Aircrafts or shampoos, every product essentially has a recipe and thus a potential market for PLM (Product Lifecycle Management),” explains Shantanu Gupta, marketing manager, India, for Dassault Systems. “Broadly, every product has some functions, aesthetics, attributes and, functions. What is a shampoo – an aggregate of some chemicals, formula and packaging.

Here, a chemist would be the equivalent of an engineer and the recipe would be the equivalent of a configuration. PLM here can work the same way as in the case of a car or an aircraft, managing different configurations like dry or oily hair,” he elaborates.

While companies like HLL are already using Dassault for PLM applications for products as new as diapers, Gupta is optimistic about further applications, “Till now everyone was spending on ERP which is transactional, but PLM is product-centric and thus any product will eventually reap its value.”

Besides these new applications, Small and Medium Business (SME) segment and emerging markets are also on the action radar for the company. The company commands a 23 per cent market share in the $11 billion PLM market and is aggressively working on the Indian market that is growing at a 40 per cent clip.

“Indian buyer is a very astute person, and if a product convinces him on the value factor, adoption rates are very encouraging. We would be pursuing aggressive growth here while extending our growth beyond the current verticals. We are already witnessing success in our new focus areas like new verticals and SME segment,” adds Gupta.
