BANGALORE: The first draft of the framework specification of Data Center markup Language (DCML) was released for public comment said an online report.

DCML is an XML-based specification for describing a data center's content and the methods by which that content is managed, regardless of the management tool being used. The DCML Organisation believes that this specification is important because it focuses on interoperability between different management systems.

Speaking during a press conference at CA World in Las Vegas, Louis Blatt, president of DCML Organisation said that DCML provides the missing element for utility computing.

Darrel Thomas, CTO of hosting services at EDS and a DCML Organisation director is hopeful that DCML will find a role in disaster-recovery applications, by allowing heterogeneous data centers to mirror each other dynamically, in event of failure, thereby offering business continuity.

The specification released this week covers the basic DCML framework, including the model by which certain data center elements are described, processing rules and the way extension specifications for networks, servers, applications and services should be described and organized. Said the report.

Companies like CA, EDS, Opsware and Tibco are already a part of DCML Organisation. Blatt said that they would now start pushing for its framework to be adopted by Web standards organisation such as Oasis or OMG. This will promote companies like MS, HP, IBM etc. to embrace the concept.

To date, none of these companies has expressed public support for the framework, the executives said.
