According to market research firm Hitwise, Facebook.com now accounts for 7.07 per cent of all American web traffic, while Google.com is the destination for 7.04 per cent of traffic, for the week ended March 13.

The site had recently reached the number 1 ranking on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day as well as the weekend of March 6 and 7. However, this is for the first time it retained the position for a week.

According to Hitwise, the market share of visits to Facebook.com increased 185 per cent last week as compared to the same week in 2009, while visits to Google.com increased 9 per cent during the same time frame. Together Facebook.com and Google.com accounted for 14 per cent of all US Internet visits last week.

In February Facebook had crossed 400 million users from 200 million users in April 2009. THis is a clear indication that the social network’s lead is likely to increase in coming months.
