KOCHI, INDIA: How many times have we looked at the constant glare from the dome light of the white lifesaver, honking its way through cut-throat traffic, and shrugged off our helplessness by praying for the unknown patient inside the ambulance?

Well, the nightmare may not immediately be over, but there’s a solution certainly in sight. A group of MTech students from the Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology, Kakkanad, has developed a solution, named Emergency Response System (ERS) to address the problem.

The solution

With sensors fit in, the Emergency Response System (ERS) connects the traffic signals with the Internet, thereby automatically switching the signal lights to green detecting arrival of an emergency vehicle, and back to normal once the vehicle has passed the route.

The ERS uses a special software and hardware hosted on cloud infrastructure. “To use this software the vehicles must have a GPS system which will enable the traffic signal to detect their presence, and switch lights automatically,” said Muhammed Sadique UK, one of the developers of the technology.

Besides Sadique, the prototype of the technology was developed by Mohamed Jasim M and Rejin R Krishna. The trio won the second prize and Rs 40,000 cash award at the recently concluded TiE Kerala event.
