NEW DELHI: Union minister of communications and IT, Dayanidhi Maran inaugurated Ericsson's GSM manufacturing facility in Rajasthan on March 11, 2005. Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje and other dignitaries from the government and private telecom operators also attended the facility inauguration.

Located at Kukas, Rajasthan, the facility has enabled Ericsson to expand its existing manufacturing level from AXE switches to manufacturing GSM Radio Base Stations (RBS) in India. The facility has a manufacturing capacity to meet the growing demand of the country. This is Ericsson's fourth GSM RBS manufacturing facility worldwide; the previous three are based in Sweden, China and Brazil.

According to the press release, the GSM RBS has been customized keeping the unique Indian conditions in mind. It will help resolve challenges like higher operation and maintenance cost, severe climatic conditions, prolonged power cuts and voltage fluctuations. "Local manufacturing enables sustained growth of Indian Telecom Industry. Ericsson is the pioneer and a visionary in this Industry and I am pleased to inaugurate the first GSM manufacturing facility in India", said Maran.
