CHENNAI: Ericsson today announced the launch of its new R&D facility in Chennai.
Union Minister for Communications and IT Dayanidhi Maran declared the new facility open in the presence of Swedish Ambassador Harald Falth and Mats Granryd, managing director of Ericsson India.
Speaking on the occasion, Maran said Ericsson was one of the few long-standing partners of the Indian telecom industry.
“With the telecom boom in India, it is a great opportunity for our people to develop an international perspective in R&D. The telecom sector is growing and needs committed players like Ericsson,” he said.
Granryd said that the Chennai centre would initially have 50 plus people and would be scaled up to 100.
“We have committed to an investment of $100 million every year for the next few years. Ericsson will reassess this figure based on growth of the market. At 16 per cent of global sales committed to R&D, Ericsson is one of the leading R&D spenders in the global telecom industry. The Indian R&D team will also work on developing cutting edge charging and multimedia solutions for Indian as well as global operators,” he added.
The new R&D facility is part of Ericsson’s national R&D team that currently comprises over 100 people based in Chennai and Gurgaon. The company would be focusing on developing charging solutions and value-added applications for the pre-paid and multimedia segments. The new facility is the third Ericsson office in Chennai.
