PetaVault is a fully automated electronic data vaulting services that compresses, de-duplicates, encrypts and backs up critical data into high availability storage environment with quick recovery and high security.

According to Netmagic's chief architect and vice president – Availability Services, C Kajwadkar, primarily all CIOs store data backups off-site largely on magnetic tapes or some equivalent media, which involves lots of manual intervention and physical actions.

“However, this method is unreliable and error prone, because by and large tapes as per observations have 40 per cent failure rates for data recovery and restorations. Apart, there's are several other storage parameters but the reliability factor highly bothers most of the CIOs,” Kajwadkar told CyberMedia News in Mumbai.

“Hence the solution is to store data electronically and transfer it electronically rather than moving it physically. With the electronic data vault, the data stored electronically on discs, called data address, is fetched using cables and transferred electronically. This data is again safe and secure with electronic encryption,” said Kajwadkar.

Kajwadkar pointed that this electronic data storage eliminates the tapes completely along with any data loss and restoration as data is transferred electronically with secure encryption. “Therefore, the datavault helps electronically store data in safe and secure manner via encryption,” he added.

Moreover, as data is stored in a compressed manner with encryption, it reduces storage needs for organizations, protects against unauthorized data access and also offers quick access, restorations and retrievals. Hence, the datavault offers physical security as well as protection against unauthorized access. Overall, the services aims to reduces data storage and backup costs and management for organizations.

“Data compression up to 90 per cent, data security with 128-bit encryption, web base simple user interface and assurance to customers for disaster recovery are some of the key features of our services,” explained Netmagic's managing director and CEO, Sharad Sanghi.

“It's a cloud based services with pay per usage model depending on the data volumes per month basis. The services can be accessed over the Internet or through a leased line. Here for any enterprises whether small or large, they will not require to invest in capex, but only pay a monthly fee per compressed data stored in the vault,” informed Sanghi.

Sanghi suggested that the benefits of services are unquantifiable in terms of build versus buy because customers gets the benefits in form of IT management, connectivity, regulatory compliance, quick restoration, online backups and many more.

In case, any enterprise has an existing back up system, Netmagic's PetaVault services can run parallel providing double data back up and security. With this new services, the company is expecting about 100 odd customers in the first year and expects business from sectors such as banking and insurance, health care, law and attorney firms.

For building this new services, it took nearly a year's time for the company with investment of over Rs 1 crore on the hardware equipments along with six months staff trainings and portal interface development. Netmagic is using a partner's license software application for core data compression feature in its services.
