EmpowerTel in tie-up to set up R&D lab

BANGALORE: EmpowerTel Networks and Leading Edge/eCapital Solutions announced

a strategic partnership to set-up a next generation Telecom R&D lab located

in New Delhi, India. The Indian R&D Lab will function as the software

development arm for EmpowerTel for its USX1000 product line.

EmpowerTel and Leading Edge/eCapital India will also support and provide

system integration for the global rollout of USX1000 product line, slated for

general availability in Q3 of Calendar Year 2000. This Lab will deliver IP-based

services for the USX1000 product line. The lab will also develop broadband

services for Internet Telephony Service Providers, Local Exchange Carriers and

Next Generation Service Providers. "In the first year the R&D Lab at

Delhi will employ about 100 professionals, focusing on core product development

and interoperability with other leading edge VoIP products. We also plan to add

another facility in Bangalore in collaboration with large global telecom and

network equipment providers", said EmpowerTel chief technology officer and

vice president business development Raj Saksena.

The IP services market globally is expected to be worth US $ 80 plus billion

over the next three years, states a press release. According to Leading

Edge/ecapital Solutions president and chief executive officer Suresh Rajpal

said, "EmpowerTel's India R&D Lab, modeled on the pattern of Bell Labs,

will incorporate quality and best-in-class processes, right from the inception

and will create carrier grade VoIP products for worldwide deployment".

EmpowerTel Networks also announced its Unified Services Exchange (USX1000) -

a centrally managed VoIP Switching Solution for Carrier market. This is a

complete carrier-class VoIP switching system that enables PSTN convergence over

Packet Networks. Based on open, modular and distributed Unified Media

Architecture (UMA), the USX1000 supports industry standards and emerging

protocols. The UMA architecture delivers high availability and scalability

imperative to the PSTN requirements with the cost and features of an IP

infrastructure. The USX1000 is a complete, managed VoIP Network Solution that

includes subsystems like the Unified Call Exchange (UCX), the Unified Services

Gateway (USG), the Unified Management System (UMS) and the Unified Application

Server (UAS).
