In 2006, Joe Tucci, chairman, president and CEO, EMC, announced an investment commitment of half a billion dollar each in India and China. The said investments were in the information infrastructure management market, building alliances and partnerships, investing in the ecosystem such as academia and R&D facilities in the countries.

Speaking on his role, Mirchandani, who is based out of Singapore, said, “Around 60 per cent of IT spend happens outside the US. So it is extremely important for EMC to be here. Moreover, the company has made a commitment of one billion dollar in India and China and so EMC has to make sure the investments are in the right direction.”

Part of his responsibility is also to post customer requirements that are unique to the Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) markets, and also manage the company’s R&D operations in India and China. “The goal is to take EMC to the next level and make sure globalization energies are applied in a consistent way,” he said.

EMC closed fiscal 2006 with revenues of $ 11.15billion and has been looking at tapping the market opportunity in the mid-market and SMB segment. Mirchandani also said that EMC would be announcing its Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bangalore shortly. All the ongoing R&D activities of the company in India would soon come under the CoE umbrella. Mirchandani said that the CoE would focus on all technologies that EMC offers including storage, security, content management and archiving and virtualization.

The company will also get on board Arumugam Saravanan, as the VP and MD of the India CoE. EMC has a workforce of around 1600 engineers in India and hopes to increase its roster to 3200 by 2010.
