Elon Musk's ambitious project to bore transportation tunnels underground, with the hopes of creating a super-fast transit system called Hyperloop which will travel and connect cities, is coming to life. Musk has shared the very first image of the transportation tunnel that is under construction in Los Angeles.

In a follow-up comment, Musk goes further to explain how the tunnels will ease traffic. “First route will go roughly parallel to the 405 from LAX to 101, with on/offramps every mile or so,” he writes, which sounds similar to how freeways function above ground. “…Electric skates carrying vehicles and people pods on the main artery travel at up to 150mph, and the skates switch to side tunnels to exit and enter. This is a big difference compared to subways that stop at every stop, whether you’re getting off or not.”

Musk confirmed in a tweet the "tunnel would be 2 miles long in two or three months and hopefully stretch the whole 405 corridor from to the 101 in a year or so."

The goal of the underground tunnel is to reduce congestion and travel times, which is similar in concept and execution Musk's idea of a Supersonic Hyperloop. It's going to be a long time before you can try out one of these tunnels, which use electric skates to carry cars and "people pods" at up to 150 MPH to avoid traffic jams.
