Electronics major opens R&D center at IISc

BANGALORE: Global electronics major, Cookson Electronics Assembly Materials (CEAM), a division of the $3.2 billion Cookson Group Plc, has opened its new state-of-the-art research center at the Entrepreneurship Center of society for innovation and development at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore.

The new research center located in Bangalore is the fourth state-of-the-art centers and other three based in the US, UK and Japan. Cookson has the distinction of being the first electronic assembly materials company to establish an R&D facility in India, thus reinforcing its Asia growth strategy.

"Cookson Electronics established itself in India more than 25 years, and we remain steadfastly committed to serving our customers in the fast growing Asia Pacific region where we have experienced double digit growth over the past five years with no slow down in sight," said David B Zerfoss, President, Cookson Electronics Assembly Materials. "The investment in our new research center in Bangalore is another significant step allowing Cookson to continue to meet the technology challenges of the future. The IIS is truely a unique institution and partner for us. We are extremely pleased to be affiliated with it, and I am certain that our work together will yield remarkable results as we advance the science of electronic assembly."

This new research center is a strategic collaboration with the IISc and focuses on the development of emerging technologies and products for other high technology business sectors.

The Cookson Electronics Research Center shares the latest in analytical equipment and laboratory facilities with the Institute, and it employs a dedicated staff, including eight PhDs. In the phase-I, CEAM is investing between $ three to five million and is expected to recruit 45 engineers.
