HYDERABAD: eBay India, formerly Bazee.com, an online marketplace, is all set to boost entrepreneurship for unemployed graduates, rural communities, women, retired, and physically challenged. Precisely, it is anticipating an increased participation from women entrepreneurs across the country.

"Presently, women entrepreneurs constitute 15 percent of the seller community in eBay.in. Over a couple of years, we expect that this would reach around 35 percent to 40 percent. Women making business through eBay India are pretty happy about being self-dependant and we foresee more and more women folk following this," said eBay India category management and marketing director Gautam Thakar.

The global online marketplace site intends to spread its presence more in B & C cities, which happens to be the fastest growing areas. "During our seminars we find an increasing interest to do business from people in these cities. They are more willing to transact as their market scope otherwise is limited. This way they are exposed to wider geographies," explained Thakar.

He added, "Besides, providing them a wider marketplace to do business, we would be simultaneously promoting various centers of excellence. Places like Surat that is famous for diamonds, Hyderabad for pearls, and similar other places popular for leather, handicrafts, jewelry etc. would thus be exposed to a fairly bigger audience."

While one in every three Internet users visit eBay.com in the US, Thakar anticipates that one in every six Internet users visit eBay.in in India. He also foresees that this would certainly increase given the increase in Internet community.

It may be recalled that eBay acquired Bazee.com in August 2004 and has presence in 240 cities, with over one million registered users across the country.
