DoT to roll out Telecom CoE

NEW DELHI, INDIA: The Department of Telecom (DoT) is giving its final touches on setting up seven ‘Telecom Center of Excellence’ in collaboration with technology institutes and business schools in the country.

Initiated during the tenure of the former Union IT and Communication minister Dayanidhi Maran, these centers would work on technology management, next generation network policy and recommendations on new technology on telecom.

“We are finalizing the details of the centers and will be out within a short time. We are planning to set up three centers within this year and all the centers in the next two years time. We are already in discussion with the country’s IITs and IIMs and three centers will be operational within this year,” the official said.

These centers would be operating under a public-private partnership, coordinated by a governing cell with members from the government and the industry. It will be a first kind of public-private partnership in the telecommunications sector. The investment for setting up of these centers will be jointly shared by the sponsoring telecom company and the government.

The centers would be registered under independent societies with members from both government and the sponsoring telecom company on the board. However, telecom industry associations Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI) will also be on board.
