DOT to host APT standardization event

NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) is hosting the eighth Forum of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Standardization Program (ASTAP) from August 2 to August 6, 2004 at Hyderabad.


The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), which is organizing the five-day program will also hold a workshop in next generation networks and also convene the 2nd Preparatory Meeting for the World Telecommunications Standardization Assembly 2004 (WTSA 04). The standardization experts, senior industry and government officials from the Asia Pacific Region and senior officials from the international organizations will attend these meetings.


According to the press release, the main objective of ASTAP is to establish Asia-Pacific regional cooperation on standardization to harmonize standardization activities, enhance the level of expertise on standardization, contribute to global standardization activities and to foster appropriate institutional arrangements for promotion of telecommunications standardization in the region.


ASTAP was established in February 1998 and the current chairman of ASTAP is Dr. Bob Horton, acting chairperson, Australian Communication Authority.



The eighth ASTAP Forum will review the progress of the ASTAP expert groups since the seventh ASTAP Forum in Seoul, Republic of Korea and will discus new topics or proposals for expert groups that need to be handled by ASTAP in order to establish regional cooperation on standardization.



The objective of the workshop on "next generation network" is to discuss the migration strategies for the next generation networks and to share the regional and global experiences.



The Second APT Preparatory Meeting for WTSA 04 which, will be held from August 2 to August 3, 2004 will further develop proposals and positions of concern to the Asia-Pacific region and endorse them as APT common proposals, so that they have a greater chance of success at the forthcoming WTSA meeting. The APT now has 32 members, 4 associate members and 93 affiliate members.
