CHENNAI: Chennai-based Dishnet Wireless has launched its broadband Wi-Fi services - "Red" in Chennai. This would enable users across this metropolis to access Internet at superior broadband speeds.

Unveiling the Dishnet Wi-Fi broadband services, Dishnet Wireless VP VG Suri said, "Initially, the Wi-Fi broadband services would be made available in eight cities and subsequently extended to 38 cities amounting to 6,000 hotspots across the country, by the end of March 2006."

"The Wi-Fi hotspot services would be made available by early May and the Wi-Max services would be formally made available by June 2005," he informed and added that Dishnet has been working closely with Intel on the Wireless Identification Program.

"Intel would be extending support in identifying hotspots, their bandwidth and other essentials that a wireless network requires and provide an environment to deploy Wi-Fi broadband services, throughout the country," said Suri.

Investing around Rs 250 crore on this project, he said that Dishnet, at present has 107 hotspots signed across in Chennai, of which 53 hotspots are operational. "The remaining hotspots would be made operational within a month," he added.

The wireless broadband service would be available at all public places, hotels, educational institutions and others, which can be accessed through Wi-Fi enabled laptops or PDAs. "Dishnet aims to become a leader in the Enterprise and Wireless Internet Services by focusing on three broad services such as corporate and enterprise solutions, wireless broadband and Wi-Fi services and would use Wi-Max technology to support all these three services," Suri observed.
