JAIPUR, INDIA: An interview with Sudesh Agarwal, CIO at Landmark Group as he dissects some current things in vogue in IT

Of the few trends that have flown in last year, what in your opining were major ones?

The last two years have been about consolidation and harnessing existing software. Challenges like optimization, processes and services are critical as business demand is on the rise and that affects expectations from IT. For any vertical, IT results and expectations are a big change.

Any buzzwords that will get stronger?

Cloud Computing will take some time to mature in India. Probably, public cloud would be a good starting point due to relative risk levels. Private and hybrid clouds will pick up. We are specifically interested in analytics as Big Data etc helps in understanding the customer better. This helps in reaching the customer better and faster.

What is your sense on the sudden re-rise of ecommerce?

It is going to be the future and there is no hiding away from it. At the same time, many e-commerce vendors find their bottom-line bleeding while top lines are great. It makes good choice to offer calculated portfolios so that the model allows for some differentiation. It has to be mean value. It would be a good idea to find ways to leverage brick-and-mortar experience with this road.

Is CRM, in its current state, enough?

Unless customer data is available, analytics is impossible. So need for rugged CRM systems has become all the more acute.

Has retail and IT gone onto a new equation?

There are no plug-and-play answers, delivering results matters. It is about improving customer experience at the end of the day. Every company may look similar in an industry but internal processes and differentiation are starkly not-so-vanilla. IT has to mean performance-enhancements, value-improvements, loyalty-as-a-revenue-stream etc.
