Industry analysts attribute the rise in demand for the facilities that can house large numbers of networked computer servers to growing internet connectivity and Singapore's status as a regional hub.

Keppel T&T, who is adding a third data centre to the two it already owns in Singapore, agrees that the growth in internet and mobile usage, as well as cloud computing, is driving the demand for data centre space.

Experts claim that the amount of information relayed across networks is growing rapidly. To cope with this, the consensus is that the maintenance of multiple data centres is required to facilitate swift recovery from network failure and data loss.

As well as Keppel T&T, CitySpring International is also making strides into this booming sector. They have already agreed to partner with Japan's Shimizu Corporation to build a new data centre in the Woodlands area.

The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) is also constructing a data centre park in conjunction with the Singapore Economic Development Board and JTC Corporation. When completed, the facility is expected to provide some 1.1 million square feet of data centre storage capacity.

Both the IDA and CitySpring projects are due to be finished in 2016, while Keppel T&T's data centre is anticipated to go live in the third quarter of this year.

As an international shipping and removal services provider, Interdean has said the growth in data centre demand bodes well for residents and those considering a move to Singapore.
