Dell to launch 250 crore campus facility

NEW DELHI: US-based PC maker Dell Computers will launch its India manufacturing project today.

The Rs 250 crore project would be part of the Sriperumbudur SEZ near Chennai.

According to highly placed sources in the Tamil Nadu Government, chief minister Dr M Karunanidhi will formally launch the manufacturing project in the presence of Union IT and Communications Minister, Dayanidhi Maran, Steve Felice, president of Dell Asia Pacific and Kip Thompson, vice president-Worldwide Facilities, Dell, in Chennai this evening.

The initial focus of the 50-acre campus facility will be concentrating on the production of desktop computers, which make up about 70 per cent of Dell's business in India. The facility would be operational by June next year.

With the establishment of the new facility, Dell would be providing employment to 1000 people directly and another 4000 indirectly.

Dell currently has manufacturing units in Penang, Malaysia, China, Austin, Nashville, Winston-Salem, Limerick and in Brazil. It is also in the process of setting up another facility in Brazil.
