Advertisment

The Global Storage Area Networks (SAN) market to grow at a CAGR of 8.42 percent over the period 2012-2016.

The main factor which is driving the Global SAN market is its improved scalability. With SAN, there is no restriction or limitation on the volume of data that can be stored as is the case with other forms of storage such as disk storage. SAN is highly scalable and can be expanded to a considerable extent. SANs are also highly efficient and their performance is not affected by Ethernet traffic or local disk throughput blockages. Data transferred from a SAN and to a SAN are on two separate networks, leading to reduced network clogging or congestion.

A major trend being witnessed in the Global SAN market is the increased adoption of FCoE SAN technology. This technology is gaining added popularity in the data storage environments. FCoE has many advantages over the Ethernet network. The major change is that FCoE offers far more intelligence and capabilities in terms of access and routing decisions. Hence, the FC equipments are more involved in network than the basic Ethernet equipment. Hence, many end-users are adopting the device for the better management of network data traffic and storage across organizational networks.

Further, the report states that the main challenge faced by the market is high cost of FC SAN. FC SAN solution, the most dominant and efficient of all technologies currently available in the SAN, is expensive to implement. SAN requires the purchase of a FC HBA to assist each host that is attached to the SAN. It also requires prohibitively high investment from startups and SMEs.
