BANGALORE: Computer maker Dell is reaping the benefits from its development center here, which was set up in 2003.

The company has so far filed 145 information disclosures including software patents. Dr Vivek Mansingh, country manager and director, Dell India R&D center, said that the company, which has 300 engineers at its center, would double its team by the end of the year.

The Bangalore R&D center is the largest center for the company outside its main facility in Austin, Texas, USA and is a center of excellence for Dell’s enterprise solutions and products. Engineers here work on software and hardware testing, cluster computing, high availability solutions and system management software.

Kevin Kettler, CTO, Dell Inc., said that the team in India was responsible for building tools and software solutions for servers, storage and client products.

“The team in India looks after testing which would simplify the interactions within a virtual machine,” he said.

Dell, which has been recording dwindling sales volumes, announced that it would extend its partnership with AMD beyond Opteron based servers to include AMD’s desktop processors. Commenting on its slowing growth, Kettler said that the company has made recent announcements to revamp its product line-ups.

“We are into the tail-end of many of our products and will be introducing the ninth generation of our server line. Though our financials may not reflect this immediately, these new moves and technology will definitely help in growing our revenues in some time,” said Kettler.

He also added that Dell was currently making investments into making customer experience better. “I admit, we have been soft in this area, but are working to change this.”

Kettler said that though Dell is not very well known for its R&D, it was making contributions around evolving standards, product level and platform level innovations.
