NEW DELHI: After Bangalore, Delhi to joined the bandwagon. Delhi policemen
are getting tech-savvy soon with the introduction of the simputers in the city.
Delhi Traffic Police is planning to purchase simputers, to be used for the field
transactions by the traffic police officers for challans and other services
related with smart card based driving license and vehicle registration
certificate.
Simputer is a small handheld computer, intended to bring computing power to the
masses of India and other developing countries. The word "Simputer" is
an acronym for "simple, inexpensive and multilingual people's
computer". The Simputer
Trust, a non-profit organisation formed in November 1999, designed the device.
A police official said that encouraged by the success story of Bangalore, Delhi
Police has also initiated the move to introduce simputers. Delhi police had a
meeting with the Bangalore policemen late last year and had decided to introduce
simputers. “Around 100 Delhi policemen have already been trained about the use
of simputers and the benefits of this gadget,” the official said.
Delhi police has already floated a tender for purchase of 100 simputers.
This system would help track down drivers who have failed to pay fines and
failed to respond to notices sent by post. It can be used to locate stolen
vehicles and identify frequent offenders for imposition of enhanced penalties
under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Above all, simputers connected
online to a databank, they can now track a motorist's past record on the spot.
“With the introduction of simputers policemen instead of issuing handwritten
traffic challans for various traffic violations will be able to issue on spot
automated printed challans. This would also keep the previous records traffic
violations by each motorists,” the official added.
Bangalore is the first city in the country to launch the system, which has
witnessed considerable improvement in abiding by traffic rules.
