Tharoor demands that victim's name be made public and reworked anti-rape law should be named after her as an honor. Bedi was quick to support his idea. This has evoked strong responses from Twitterati.

Tharoor, on January 1, tweeted (to close to two million followers): "Wondering what interest is served by continuing anonymity of #DelhGangRape victim. Why not name&honour her as a real person w/own identity?" (sic)

He further added: "Unless her parents object, she should be honoured&the revised anti-rape law named after her. She was a human being w/a name, not just a symbol." (sic)

Kiran Bedi expressed solidarity with Tharoor, as she tweeted: "I support Shashi Tharoor on naming new law on rape after her real name or 'Nirbyaya'! This has been done in USA: Brady, Megan, Karly, Jessica Law etc." (sic)

She, however, added, "Government's helpline is another avenue of help! We request its performance be independently audited every month and made public for info." (sic)

Soon, Bedi was countered by many Tweeple. Tojo (@tojotom) retorted: "because it's done in US doesn't make it right We have no right to play politics with victims name, only her parents can decide."

Pranay Gupte believes that the idea would inflict more pain on the woman's family. Samir (@samir) tweeted: "Pls ask this question to our home minister who got Delhi Police to file cases against newspapers disclosing her name." (sic)

Shehla Rashid (@ShehlaRashid) response to Tharoor tweet: "I see the sentiment; but far from naming new law after her, the government was busy teargassing protesters demanding justice." (sic)

Subsequently, Biocon CMD Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw replied to Tharoor, stating, "That's the question I've been asking as well. Especially when the new rape law needs to immortalize her by bearing her name." (sic)

Pawan Khera (@Pawankhera) said, "more important t expose details of families & neighbors of rapists instead. Why this obsession with naming her?" (sic)

Later, Tharoor clarified: "I stated v.clearly "unless parents object". They might not. Does no one remember Geeta Chopra Award 4 a Braveheart raped&killed decades ago?" (sic)
