MUMBAI, INDIA: The telecom regulatory authority of India (TRAI) finally has a new chairman.

The post that was vacant after Rahul Khullar’s retirement on May 14, 2015, will be filled-in by yet another heavyweight—Ram Sevak Sharma, Secretary, Department of Electronics and Information Technology (Deity).

Sharma’s appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. He will be in charge for the next three years.

A man of many hats, Sharma has performed various roles. He was Director General and Mission Director of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). He also oversaw the implementation of various e-governance projects in all the departments of the Jharkhand government as the Chief Secretary to the government of Jharkhand.

During his posting with the Government of India, he has worked in the Department of Economic Affairs and has dealt with bilateral and multilateral development agencies like the World Bank, ADB, MIGA and GEF. He played a key role in the financing infrastructure projects in the highways, ports, airports and telecom sectors.

Sharma has a master’s degree in mathematics from IIT, Kanpur and another master’s in computer science from the University of California (USA).
